Wear your Blue Ribbon with Pride!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Wednesday and Thursday: Tell Your Students Who We Are:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>572 Adjunct Faculty Members vs. 448 Tenure Track Faculty at UML<\/p>\n<p>We are all members of the Adjunct Faculty Union<\/p>\n<p>Nationally, 70% of all faculty are adjunct \u2013 the trend has been toward more adjuncts<\/p>\n<p><b>Ask your Students:<\/b> \u00a0if they can tell the difference between an adjunct and tenured professor, or if they know what the difference is<\/p>\n<p><b>Explain Tenure:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Guaranteed job at the University<\/li>\n<li>Difficult to get \u2013 long process, publication, committee approval<\/li>\n<li>Good salaries and benefits<\/li>\n<li>Voice in governance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Explain being Adjunct:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Technically, means \u201cextra.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>60-70% of faculty are adjunct \u2013 not \u201cextra\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Many have PhD\u2019s<\/li>\n<li>Many have interesting work experience\/achievements outside of the university<\/li>\n<li>Teaching is our main job at the University<\/li>\n<li>Easier to get hired as adjunct<\/li>\n<li>Little job security<\/li>\n<li>No retirement or health care<\/li>\n<li>Low pay<\/li>\n<li>Unionized 3 years ago \u2013 many improvements since then<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Allow some time for question and answer.<\/p>\n<p><b>Hand out the Bookmarks!<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Feb 25 and 26 are National Adjunct Awareness Day!
